The 2014 All Ireland Masters Football final between Mayo and Galway takes place this Saturday.

The All Ireland Masters football final between Mayo and Galway is set for this Saturday at the Clonberne Community Sports Field in Galway. Throw in is scheduled for 3.30 and will be shown live on Irish TV, channel 191 on Sky. This will be Galways 3rd All Ireland Masters football final on the run, while Mayo last won the Masters in 2009. The Gaelic Masters Association promotes itself as a competitive inter-county tournament for footballers over the age of 40.
The GAA has in recent years distanced itself from the Masters football tournament, it used to promote the game in the past. Player insurance seems to be the major stumbling block therefore it’s not covered by the GAA insurance, or the GAA player injury scheme. All the match’s are played on community pitch’s none have been played on official GAA grounds.
The GAA does still promote a masters’ competition, albeit less competitive, under its social and recreational games initiative.
“This will showcase the phenomenal interest and passion that Gaelic players still have in playing our native games despite their age,” said chairperson of the Gaelic Masters Association, James Breslin.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the effort and work of the Gaelic Masters Association and to encourage more counties to get involved with the competition.”
The Mayo Masters have to date played Tyrone, winning on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-05. Mayo then beat Leitrim 3-14 to 1-04. Mayo again met Leitrim in the Masters football semi final this time winning by 1-06 to Leitrim 0-07 to secure a place in the final.
The Mayo v Galway final will be preceded by the Shield final between Cavan and Tyrone with throw in at 2pm.
Result : Galway 0-07, Mayo 0-06.

Three All Stars for Mayo!

There were 6 All Star nominations for Mayo announced earlier this month. The six nominees for Mayo were; Full Back, Keith Higgins; Half Back, Colm Boyle & Lee Keegan; Midfield, Seamus O’Shea; Half Forward, Aidan O’Shea; Full Forward, Cillian O’Connor.
Keith Higgins received his 3rd All Star.
Colm Boyle gets his 2nd All Star award.
Cillian O’Connor who is the highest scorer in the Championship this year with a tally of 5-36 and young player of the year in 2011 and 2012 was awarded his first All Star – the first of many, we predict.
In other news, Mayo are handsomely represented on the Compromise Rules team selected by Paul Earley to travel to Perth next month to represent Ireland. Lee Keegan, Colm Boyle, Kevin McLoughlin and Aidan O’Shea are the Mayo delegates on the 25-man panel, and they will be joined by fellow Mayoman Pearse Hanley who is currently lighting up the AFL with Brisbane Lions. Congrats to all the lads on their achievements over the past week.

The 2015 GAA Championship draw has been made.
The 2014 GAA Championship has barely even finished, but already the 2015 draw has been made and we are looking forward once again.
Before a name was pulled in Connacht, we already knew of two definite fixtures. Galway will travel to Gaelic Park in New York for the preliminary round on the “B” side of the draw, and Roscommon will travel to the Emerald Grounds in Ruislip to play London in the quarter final on the “A” side of the draw. Leitrim will get to play the winners of New York and Galway in the other quarter final. It’s safe to say that anyone who made it to the Big Apple in May of this year will be looking on in envy at the Tribesmen as they get set to make the trip Stateside.
Sligo are into the semi-final, playing the winners of London & Roscommon on the “A” side of the draw and the mighty Green and Red will get to play the winners of New York/Galway/Leitrim in the other semi-final. Venues, dates and times are yet to be confirmed by the Provincial Fixture Planning committee, but as soon as we know, we’ll update our 2015 fixtures page, do make sure to check back.
If you’re in the same frame of mind as us, you’ll still have a bit of a mental hangover after what can only be described as a bruising season. As the long nights draw in, the heady days of Championship football seem a long way away, but the FBD league is only weeks away. Nothing like a chilly January night under lights in MacHale Park to whet the appetite for the promise of the year ahead!
There was lots of discussion on social media during the draw last night about the logic of holding the draw so soon after the 2014 championship draws to a close – why not hold it in the new year and make a bigger deal of it? Are the GAA missing a trick here?
The fact that only certain draws are made on such a platform is also a talking point:
A very fair point too – if the GAA is serious about promoting these competitions, they need to start putting their money where their mouth is. Speaking from a Mayo point of view, our hurlers put in a serious amount of effort each year, for little reward (and very small crowds!). So as supporters, it would be good for us to recognise that and get behind them a little more too.
In the meantime we have the County Championship Final to look forward to next Sunday week and after that we can all get behind the lads from Achill, Ballyhaunis and Ballintubber/Mitchels in their respective Connacht Championships.

A total of six Mayo GAA players were nominated in this years All Star nominations which were announced this morning. The six nominees for Mayo are; Full Back, Keith Higgins; Half Back, Colm Boyle & Lee Keegan; Midfield, Seamus O’Shea; Half Forward, Aidan O’Shea; Full Forward, Cillian O’Connor. It’s fair to say that there is some stiff competition for places, particularly in the half-forward line which is looking particularly crowded with the inclusion of regular full-forward Michael Murphy. And as always, the selection is sure to generate plenty of discussion over the next couple weeks. Best of luck to the six lads on the night – if it was up to us, they’d all be getting gongs.

It’s been a quiet week on the Mayo GAA front. With all the recent drama, it’s probably no harm, and it feels like everyone is keeping their heads down and behaving themselves … although we get the feeling that’s only temporary … We ourselves have been taking a bit of time out, but are starting to resurface and plan for 2015. Watch this space for updates!
One of the great joys that comes with the end of the All-Ireland Championship is the ramping up of the club championships. Last Sunday saw Castlebar Mitchels beat Garrymore, and Ballintubber beat Knockmore in the Treanlaur Catering Senior Football Championship to set up another South Mayo final on 19th October. The day was notable in particular for the eleven-goal spectacle that was the latter game, which saw the four O’Connor brothers of Ballintubber, Padraig, Ruaidhri, Diarmuid and Cillian score six goals between them for their club (the latter with a hat-trick), thus sealing their inclusion in GAA table quiz questions for decades to come.

Now that the Sunday Game is over, if you want a football fix you’ll need to head outdoors! And the good news is, there’s a triple-header of club football activity in Elverys MacHale Park this Sunday:
- 12pm: Swinford take on Westport in the Breaffy House Hotel & Spa Resort Junior B Final
- 2pm: Achill take on Castlebar Mitchels in the Breaffy House Hotel & Spa Resort Junior A Final
- 3.45pm: The Egan Jewellers Intermediate Championship Final sees Ballyhaunis clash with Hollymount/Carramore.
On the Ladies’ Football front, there’s also some club action on Saturday 4th October:
- Carnacon (Mayo) take on St. Patrick’s Dromahair (Leitrim) @ 2.30pm in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry in the Tesco Connacht Senior Club Championship
- And on the minor side, C.L. McHale Rovers (Mayo) meet Mohill (Leitrim) @ 4.30pm in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry.
For those of you who are Croke Park/GAA Mayo Season ticket holders, these are now open for renewals only. There are no new tickets available at this point, as Mayo supporters have bought up their full allocation of GAA season tickets; however, new tickets may (or may not) become available at a later date. You should have received an email reminding you to renew: if not, all the information is here. There has been a €10 increase in the price of the season ticket this year – no information on the reason behind the increase has been forthcoming from the GAA Season ticket office thus far.
In Club ’51 news, we are off to the Blog Awards Ireland tomorrow night where we are hoping we might take away some silverware. Cross your fingers for us (and for everyone else, ‘cos some of us are very poor losers indeed).
