Club Championship Connacht Final

Club Championship Connacht Final

The Club Championship Connacht Final  – MacHale Park, Sunday 23rd November

The club Championship Connacht final between Ballintubber (Mayo) and Corofin (Galway) throws in at 2pm this Sunday the 23rd November in Elverys MacHale Park. Ballintubber are bidding to win their first ever Connacht Club Championship against the more experienced Corofin, themselves five-time provincial and one-time All-Ireland winners  It promises to be an intriguing encounter with Ballintubber showing fine form over their last few games and a calm, clinical confidence that belies their inexperience at this level.

Connacht club championship

The O’Connor brothers from Ballintubber.

The three O’Connor brothers Padraig, Diarmuid and Cillian will be looking to replicate the sharp-shooting form of previous games, with roving Ruaidhri  in the half back-line.  The formidable combination of midfield maestros Stevie Broderick and Jason Gibbons will be aiming to drive the team from the middle, and of course the experience of county stalwart Alan Dillon combined with his relentless workrate will mean that Ballintubber, having effectively dispatched St. Brigids of Roscommon in a thrilling display two weeks ago should have no lack of self-belief when taking to the field  on Sunday, despite Corofin’s status as favourites.

The Galway side meanwhile are fresh from a 35-point annihilation of Leitrim’s plucky Aughawillan, with Galway senior Michael Lundy finding the net three times. This comes off the back of decisive rather one-sided wins in Galway versus Milltown and Salthill-Knocknacarra. It remains to be seen whether Corofin’s confidence off the back of such a run of emphatic victories will trump Ballintubber’s battle-hardened run to the final, but we’re sure as hell looking forward to finding out.

Sunday, 2pm, MacHale Park Castlebar – dig out your red jumpers and be there to cheer on our county champions in what has the potential to be a thrilling battle. Here’s how to get here.

Paul Earley the Irish International Rules Series manager has named his team to play Australia next month. There are five Mayo natives named on the team, including Pearse Hanley who is currently playing for Brisbane Lions. The Irish manager speaking to GAA.ie this week has admitted that he had to make some difficult calls. He beleives that he has the strongest team possible travelling to play Australia next month. The first test is to be played in Perth on Saturday the 22nd of November.

There are four Mayo players travelling to Australia with the 25 man squad. The 4 Mayo players included in the International Rules Series team are Colm Boyle, Lee Keegan, Kevin Mc Loughlan and Aidan O’Shea. From an initial training panel of 38 the final touring team of 25 was picked after a final training session  in Croke Park last week. The 2014 Irish International rules series team are as follows;

Colm Begley (Laois), Colm Boyle (Mayo), Seán Cavanagh (Tyrone), Cathal Cregg (Roscommon), Mattie Donnelly (Tyrone), Finian Hanley (Galway), Pearse Hanley (Brisbane Lions), Darren Hughes (Monaghan), Lee Keegan (Mayo), James McCarthy (Dublin), Ciaran McDonald (Tipperary), Neil McGee (Donegal), Chrissy McKaigue (Derry), Kevin McKernan (Down), Kevin McLoughlin (Mayo), Conor McManus (Monaghan), David Moran (Kerry), Niall Morgan (Tyrone), Ross Munnelly (Laois), Michael Murphy (Donegal, captain), Colm O’Neill (Cork), Pádraig O’Neill (Kildare), Paddy O’Rourke (Meath), Aidan O’Shea (Mayo), Aidan Walsh (Cork, vice-captain).

The Irish team are due to fly out to Australia on the 12th of November. The international rules series this year will only be one test, instead of two tests as in previous years. This will make it all the more difficult on the Irish team, as well as the fact of having to travel and the intense heat there. The Irish team will get to play a warm up game against a Victorian Football League All Star team at the Sandringham VFL Grounds on Sunday, November 16. The one test series will be played at the Patterson Stadium in Perth (formerly the Subiaco Oval and the current home of AFL sides Fremantle and the West Coast Eagles) on November 22.

Match Regulation Changes For 2015

Match Regulation Changes For 2015

Some match regulation changes for 2015 confirmed by central council.

gaa crestThe GAA Central Council met last Saturday where it was confirmed there would be some match regulation changes for 2015. One of the main regulation changes are; ” The CCCC now has the authority to withdraw sideline privileges from team officials who make derogatory comments in relation to a match official before a game or in interviews subsequent to a game. Previously, suspensions were the only penalty that could be proposed in these instances”.

Other regulation changes which were proposed or implemented at the meeting, as was published on the GAA website. The press release from Central Council is  as follows;

“Central Council will bring a motion to Congress in February which will seek to require that a playing panel of 26 players be registered for all senior inter-county championship games by 9.00am on the Thursday before a game. With the exception of a replacement for a goalkeeper or sub-goalkeeper, no changes can be made to the registered list. The penalty for including a player not included on the registered list will be forfeiture of game. Teams will also be required to submit their starting team to the referee and to committee-in-charge at least 20 minutes before throw-in. The penalty for starting a player not on that list will also be loss of game.

Congress will also be asked to make Hawkeye a permanent feature in Croke Park while its installation in Thurles and in the re-developed stadiums in Casement Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh is also to be prioritised

It was also confirmed that the Workgroup which was established to review the implementation of the ‘Calendar Year’ from 2016 will submit its proposals to January’s Central Council meeting.”

This new proposal about naming the teams by the Thursday before a match should mean the end of wondering will the team named in the programme on match day will be the actual team starting! It should put an end to naming “dummy” teams on match days. Only recently at this years All Ireland final between Donegal and Kerry, Jim Mc Guinness’ team was announced with Christy Toye and Paddy McBrearty named in the starting 15. When the teams lined up for the National Anthem however, Rory Kavanagh and Darach O’Connor had taken their places.

The All Ireland Masters football final between Mayo and Galway is set for this Saturday at the Clonberne Community Sports Field in Galway. Throw in is scheduled for 3.30 and will be shown live on Irish TV, channel 191 on Sky. This will be Galways 3rd All Ireland Masters football final on the run, while Mayo last won the Masters in 2009. The Gaelic Masters Association promotes itself as a competitive inter-county tournament for footballers over the age of 40.

The GAA has in recent years distanced itself from the Masters football tournament, it used to promote the game in the past. Player insurance seems to be the major stumbling block therefore it’s not covered by the GAA insurance, or the GAA player injury scheme. All the match’s are played on community pitch’s none have been played on official GAA grounds.

The GAA does still promote a masters’ competition, albeit less competitive, under its social and recreational games initiative.

“This will showcase the phenomenal interest and passion that Gaelic players still have in playing our native games despite their age,” said chairperson of the Gaelic Masters Association, James Breslin.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the effort and work of the Gaelic Masters Association and to encourage more counties to get involved with the competition.”

2014 gaelic masters finalThe Mayo Masters have to date played Tyrone, winning on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-05. Mayo then beat Leitrim 3-14 to 1-04. Mayo again met Leitrim in the Masters football semi final this time winning by 1-06 to Leitrim 0-07 to secure a place in the final.

The Mayo v Galway final will be preceded by the Shield final between Cavan and Tyrone with throw in at 2pm.

Result : Galway 0-07, Mayo 0-06.
