Cork Here We Come

Cork Here We Come

We’re off on the road again, Cork here we come!

Cork GAA crest

Mayo GAA crestWe’re off on our travels again, this time to Páirc Úi Rínn in the “People’s Republic of Cork”!  The last time Mayo played Cork (it was in Páirc Úi Caoimh) was back in 2013 in round 7 of the league (where we won by a point, 0-10 to 0-11). Who remembers Cillian’s 2 cracking frees from each of the sidelines? Mayo Club ’51 will of course be making the long journey south, some of us will be travelling down on Saturday and others on Sunday morning.

Please note that the game throws in at the earlier time of 2 pm (which, by the way will be summertime as the clocks go forward an hour on Saturday! So don’t be late for the match or Mass either!). The referee for this match will be Eddie Kinsella, who will hopefully have a good day at the office! Tickets for this match will also be slightly dearer at €20 (because of the hurling). Make sure to avail of the €5 discount by purchasing before the day.

Getting There and Parking

  • Getting to Páirc Úi Rínn isn’t too difficult. Anyone that has been to Páirc Úi Caoimh before, it is only about half a mile away. Follow our map below from the City centre.
  • Parking however is not as plentiful as it is around Páirc Úi Caoimh (as limited as that is!). It is all mostly on- street parking around Páirc Ú Rínn so if you’re planning on driving get there early or you’ll have a bit of a trek on your hands and a traffic jam getting out.

Bus Travel

  • There’s a bus leaving from Shrule/Glencorrib on Sunday  –  contact Tom Sheridan on 087 925 6326 for details.
  • Our friends in the The Sea Rod Inn Doohoma are organising their customary bus on the day, leaving at 7.30 am – Call Barrett Coaches on 097 83544 for details.
  • We’ve no knowledge of anyone organising a bus from Dublin though we’ve been contacted by a few people enquiring about same. If you’re interested in organising a bus or travelling on one, or indeed doing some car pooling, please leave a comment below.

Accomodation

  • Most people traveling down to Cork the day before will have already booked accommodation. However if you haven’t booked yet, you might still be in luck!  A Mayo supporter has informed us that they have an apartment available for this Saturday night in Cork. It sleeps 6 and is €250 for the night. If you are interested, or if you know anyone who may be, drop us a line and hopefully you’ll be sorted out!

On the Town

  • If there are any of you planning on travelling to Cork on Saturday, we will be having the now customary Club ’51 meetup in the Mutton Inn on Mutton Lane, beside the English Market. Visit their page here; https://www.facebook.com/mutton.lane/info?tab=overview
  • Anyone that likes some “Blues” music, you won’t be disappointed in Cork! We’ve been told there’s a great band called “The Watermelons” playing in Charlies Bar, 2 Union Quay on Saturday night that are well worth a listen!
  • Philip Gillivan from Westport has a pub in MacCurtain St Cork called the Shelbourne Bar. Anyone on match day before or after the match who is wearing a Mayo Jersey/t shirt and producing a match ticket will get a free pint of Heineken. Up Mayo!

Flags

  • As it’s an away game, the more colour we can bring, the better. And the more noise we can make, the better. We’ll be giving our banners and flags another good airing this year, so help us out, bring your own and let’s make that stand a noisy sea of green and red.
Best of Luck to Davitt College

Pearse Park in Longford is the venue this Saturday 21st March at 1 PM for the All Ireland Girls Senior Schools final. Once again a Mayo team, Davitt College , contests an All-Ireland final.

They will play the Leinster champions Kilcullen from Kildare. Davitts beat the Ulster champions from Monaghan Colaiste Oiriall in the Semi final and vanquished Leitrim’s finest Ballinamore in the Connacht Final.

Route ’51 at the GAA World Games

Route ’51 at the GAA World Games

Mayo and Club ’51 were well represented at the GAA World Games in Abu Dhabi  last weekend.

Marie Sweeney from Bangor along with her mother Pauline and Imelda Mullarkey (who won the shield with New York ladies) were flying the flag as it continues its way across the globe.

They are pictured here under the arch with two members of the South African Gaels team who had visited Castlebar and attended the Monaghan game the weekend before.

Please get in touch with us if you live near one of the worlds great wonders and would like to be preserved forever behind a glass frame with the Club ’51 flag outside the Eiffel Tower in Paris , Taipei 101 in Taiwan or the Big Banana in Coffs’ Harbour.

Bring The Flags, Bring The Noise

Bring The Flags, Bring The Noise

Casting our minds back to last Sunday, what a  weekend we had in Derry and what a nail-biting finish.  And what a feeling heading back down the road to know we had two more points in our pocket after hanging on to secure the win. And what about that support? Not for the first time, Mayo away support outnumbered the home sides (significantly so) and the noise in the stand was fantastic.

In keeping with that theme, this Saturday sees one of the highlights in the Mayo GAA calendar as we welcome the Boys in Blue to MacHale Park for the now customary Saturday evening game under lights. It has to be said, the Dubs’ travelling army always brings a bit of fun to town, and we’re looking forward to giving them a warm Mayo welcome. We’re also looking forward to showing them that they’re not the only supporters who can generate an atmosphere!

we need your help

We need you

The Club ’51 crew are starting to ramp up their efforts for the year and we’ll be putting in a special effort on Saturday night to really make MacHale Park a Mayo fortress. That means we need colour and we need noise, so this is where you come in. We need you!

Flags

Mayo flags in Croke Park

On this massive occasion, we’re asking as many as possible among you to wear your colours and bring along a flag. Big flags, small flags, car flags, it doesn’t matter. Give it to the kids to wave, wave it yourself like you just don’t care! We’ll have all our flags and banners on show, the Dubs will have their hats, flags and headbands, make sure you do too.

Bring back the Mayo Roar and make some noise

When the team runs out and after the national anthem – get on your feet and roar! This is going to be one tough battle, so let’s make it a battleground.  A win would be massive, so be the 16th man and get behind the lads. Do what it takes to keep the atmosphere electric- beat a drum, start a chant, throw out a few bars of the Green and Red of Mayo. Embrace the bank holiday weekend and let your hair down. Having no hair however is not an excuse to sit in the corner like a wet blanket (and we’ve seen enough of blankets lately).

Drown out the Dubs and Take the Hill

The Dubs are well able to sing when they’re winning, but we can be every bit as good at making a racket ourselves. We’ll have our work cut out for us though and will need help! We’ll be congregating this for this game on the terraces behind the Bacon Factory goal on the Sportlann side of the pitch. And all you Dublin fans are welcome too!

We’re hoping that, with some collective effort, we can turn the entire end from this:

Go wide!!

Into this:

YoureNotSinging

If a group of well organised priests’ house keepers from a small, remote island off the west of Ireland can do it for an All-Priest over 75 indoor soccer grudge match , then why can’t we? Even the great Fr. Romeo Sensini couldn’t handle the pressure that day.

After the game

Because it’s a Saturday night, it’d be rude not to go for a sociable pint or two with our friends from the Pale. Join us in An Sportlann after the game and who knows where the night will take us!

Season Tickets

As you probably already know, being a season ticket holder has many advantages. It allows you free entry into any league match (code-specific). Season tickets also allow you free entry into the All-Ireland Club Finals between Corofin from Co. Galway and Slaughtneil from Co Derry on St. Patrick’s Day, (throw in is now 4pm). Corofin are managed by Mayo & Crossmolina’s own Stephen Rochford. We know that any Mayo vs Galway tie is sometimes the be all and end all between rivals, but on this occasion we hope all Mayo folk will give our Galway neighbours, and Connacht representatives, their support on St Patrick’s Day.

Mayo Club 51 are putting the call out to all season ticket holders if you are not using your tickets for the final, to help out Corofin supporters. First of all you will need to log-in to your season ticket account and go to “Special Purchases” to request your (free) tickets. You can e-mail tickets directly to the Corofin P.R.O. John Fahey,  pro.corofin.galway [at] gaa.ie.
